In American culture, the new year is a time for resolutions, goals for improving our lives. We say we’ll lose weight, make more money, and improve our relationships. Sounds great, right? Well, only 8% of Americans make their resolutions a reality. Why? Because they don’t know how to set goals. Read our 3-part strategy to setting goals for a perfect 2016 (based on this Harvard study), then use what you’ve learned to enter our 2016 Goal-Setting Contest:
Write down your goals
Write down exactly what you want to accomplish. Be as specific as possible. Instead of, “I want better grades,” make it, “I want to improve my computer science test scores by 10%.” With a specific goal in front of your eyes, your brain can actually start working on making it real.
Break them up into small tasks
Big goals are made of hundreds of smaller ones. Let’s say you want to earn $2 million annually. Break that goal into pieces: request a 10% raise, make one new investment, and learn one new marketable professional skill. These are all things you can do now, and they will help you work towards a bigger goal that might take years to achieve.
Set a few that are too big to reach
Not everything you do should seem possible based on the kind of person you are right now. But they may be possible based on the kind of person you will be in 5, 10, or 20 years. Write down a goal that sounds impossible now and set small goals that keep you on that road. You’ll be surprised how close you’ve gotten to it in just 2 years.
